About Me

Welcome!

My name is Erica and I tattoo from Astra Lines, Edinburgh, UK.

Based in the magical historic city of Edinburgh, I draw inspiration from this enchanting city and surroundings, which have been my home for over 10 years.

I craft custom, unique tattoos for my clients and enjoy working along a variety of themes, such as;

cats, animals, nature, botanical
japanese inspired
witchy, magical or folklore themes
butterflies, moths, insects, bugs

I work primarily in an illustrative blackwork style; with occasional colour elements and sometimes, full colour pieces. I take inspiration from the natural world, combining it with a mystical outlook to create my artwork.

I truly believe in the strength and healing power derived from the decision to mark our bodies forever. Whether that be for a sentimental reason, or a personal one, it is an honour to be trusted to create something for you that you will wear forever, marking this period in time.

I strive to provide an attentive, caring service, with diligence and care. I am honoured and grateful to all who choose to book with me and support my work. I am also so grateful for all conversations shared and memories made with my clients. I have met so many incredible people over the years.

Being tattooed has empowered me to feel more comfortable in my skin, as I have Psoriasis and as an ex-self harmer, I consciously choose to re-create new stories and design armour to navigate the world. I hope I can assist in helping you to choose how to decorate your mortal form too.

Moths are a symbol of evolution; a full lifecycle from larva to adults. They overcome great challenges to grow out of the cocoon and into new beginnings.
They are powerful symbols of transformation and change, renewal and rebirth. Striving towards a goal and following your intuition. ✨

A fun moth fact for y’all today: some hawk-moths can fly up to 30mph!!!!

Moths are also an indicator species, which means their numbers tell our scientists if an ecosystem is doing well or badly. So, if you are not seeing any moths, there are ways to improve the habitats around us for them, such as: having a diverse range of plants, flowers, grass and shrubs, which provide food for caterpillars. Planting native trees, such as willow and oak. Do not use chemicals and keep hard landscaping to a minimum, make those gardens wild and abundant! Don’t clear up all the dead leaves in winter, as they provide a great place for caterpillars and pupae to hide.

Tattooing has been the wildest ride, but it is so rewarding. I really am so grateful and think now, that exactly what I have in my life now is what I only wished for even just 5 years ago. So grateful to all the friends I've made along the way 🥹 I feel so lucky.

This year was full of changes, from opening and moving to our new private studio @astra.lines.tattoo to doing my first convention in my hometown of Newcastle @bignorthtattooshow ❤️✨

I won't lie and say that this year has been easy, personally I've had a lot of health issues which have drained a lot of my physical energy. I'm hoping for more ease in my body for 2026 🐱

✨Kirin concept available✨

The Kirin is a creature from Japanese folklore, the concept originated from China, as the Qilin. These magical creatures are revered as divine beings, the embodiment of wisdom, prosperity and peace. They walk on clouds or water to not harm living things. They are described as having the face and body of a deer, with scales like a dragon, and a fire like mane or a lion. Often with one or two horns, sometimes referred to as the Japanese unicorn.
I depicted them here as a cute and peaceful, joyful creature. ✨🪽

Would like to do this on the thigh, but can be adapted for other placements 🌿

Exploring combining soft and sharp imagery, thorns, animals, chopped up, strange dead birds, but also balancing the liminal space between beauty, cute and death.

I can’t help but look at dead birds, rats or mice I see on the street, it’s often one of the only times we can get up close and have a look (apart from taxidermy) at one point I thought I would like to do taxidermy as a hobby but honestly, I don’t have the stomach for it. It’s strange how something so disturbing is so curious and intriguing. I also love moths, they intrigue me as they are fluffy, strange and interesting. Cool moth fact: butterflies evolved from moths, as moths began to adapt to a daytime life, to suck nectar. ✨

These were some fun pieces I drew from ideas I wanted to explore, I would be happy to create similar pieces if this inspired you, or change them slightly ✨

Loved working on this magical celestial snake piece with wrap around vines for Teri this week ✨

Combining lots of elements I really enjoy, she gave me creative freedom with her elements and it was super fun drawing up and figuring out a lovely flow 🥹 placed the vine parts separately so we could get a nice flow around the arm, swipe to see how it wraps around ✨

Snakes are a symbol of new life, rebirth, growth, shedding of our own skin. Lotus are also a symbol of rebirth, an amazing flower that grows so beautifully, out of murky water. Symbolising that even if the below is dark, we can thrive, into the light and new life.

September for me is a time for reflection, it is my birthday month so inevitably has me thinking about the past, present and future.

I turned 31 recently and this month also marks 10 years since I moved to Edinburgh. I am also so grateful to have been tattooing for around 2 years now. I love working at Astra Lines, our peaceful little sanctuary that was lovingly created by us.

5 years ago I was only dreaming of doing what I do now. I had taken my portfolio into many studios after the 1st lockdown. For me the pandemic was a time of confusion, loneliness and visualising a better future. I didn’t tell many people of my goal to be a tattoo artist, or most of my family, I moved in silence. I had many rejections, setbacks and obstacles to overcome, yet I didn’t give up.

Often these days I find myself in a flow state, drawing or tattooing and I catch myself; grateful of where I am now. I get to draw pictures for a living, meeting so many wonderful people from around the world! I have forged many strong friendships, also from around the world.

The past year has been hard, my health has been my focus, but I am grateful for my life. To be excited to wake up for the challenges of the day, with people who love and support me, my cats, and the everlasting possibilities of growth and learning.

The message is: Stay strong and believe in yourself. You don’t have to explain your journey to others, only you need to understand. Often the road is difficult, yes you may slip but it doesn’t mean you should give up. Work towards your goals each day. Things do not happen overnight. In increments, the goal will become clearer and closer. Even though our goalposts always change, as we achieve or change course, do not forget to appreciate how far you have come. We are all on our own timelines, there is no point in comparison, each journey is different.
